Netherlands vs Ukraine History

Ukraine are relatively young in experience at major tournaments, having only debuted at the Euro finals as co-hosts of the 2008 edition. The Blue and Yellow beat Sweden, 2-1, in their group opener but went on to exit the tournament without advancing to the knockouts.

The Ukrainians again crashed out at the group stage of Euro 2016, before progressing to the knockouts for the first time at Euro 2020. The Blue and Yellow were one of four third-place teams to advance and even managed to overcome Sweden in the last-16. Ultimately though, Ukraine lost to eventual finalists England, 4-0, in the quarter-finals.

On the other hand, the Netherlands have more to look back on in terms of achievements at the European Championship. Ons Oranje first participated in this competition in 1976, finishing third out of four competing teams. 1988 was a more successful venture as the Dutch captured a maiden European title. After progressing from their group, the Netherlands overcame hosts West Germany in the semi-finals, courtesy of goals from Marco van Basten and Ronald Koeman. Van Basten also found the net in the final against the Soviet Union, with Ruud Gullit also on the scoresheet at the Olympiastadion Munich.

Holland later advanced to the semi-finals at several Euro events, such as the 1992, 2000, and 2004 editions, but this was as far as they would go on each occasion. More recently, the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals at Euro 2008 but suffered defeat at the hands of Russia. The Dutch also crashed out at the group stage in 2012 before failing to qualify for the 2016 event.

These teams have met just a few times (and only once at a major tournament) prior to Euro 2024. Their first clash was contested in May 2008, in the build-up to the Euro 2008 finals. The Netherlands earned a 3-0 victory at De Kuip, courtesy of goals from Dirk Kuyt, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Ryan Babel.

The sides later met during the group stage of Euro 2020, ending in a five-goal thriller in favour of the Dutch. Georginio Wijnaldum and Wout Weghorst gave Holland a two-goal lead before Ukraine scored twice in quick succession to draw level with just a few minutes remaining at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Denzel Dumfries had the final say as he scored to secure a 3-2 win for the Netherlands.
