Portugal breezed through their qualifying group which consisted of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Slovakia.

A Seleção took victory in all 10 of their qualifiers, the only team to end the campaign with a 100% record. The Portuguese scored a total 36 goals and conceded just twice across 900 minutes of qualifying action.

Cristiano Ronaldo netted 10 goals himself, while Bruno Fernandes created seven goals – more assists than any other player involved in the qualifying campaign.

Portugal National Team History

There have been a number of incredibly gifted and talented individuals to have played for the Portugal National Football Team at the European Championships. Cristiano Ronaldo, Rui Costa, Luis Figo and Eusebio are four players that have achieved legendary status among A Seleção fans.

There are few European teams with as consistent a record of success in UEFA Euros as Portugal.

Of the eight finals they have qualified for up to Euro 2020, they have made it to at least the quarter-finals on seven occasions. This record is significantly better than their form at the World Cup, where even getting out of their group has been a struggle.

After falling at the qualification stage in every tournament from 1960 to 1980, little was expected of the team's chances in 1984 when they did finally make it, but Portugal performed very well at the finals in France, getting all the way to the semi-finals where they lost to an extra-time goal from Michel Platini.

Euro 1996 gave Luis Figo, Rui Costa, and Paulo Sousa a chance to shine, with the team getting to the quarter-finals in England.

Shocked by Greece

In 2000 they once again got to the last four, and in 2004 they booked their first-ever final appearance in the tournament they hosted, where they met a stubborn Greece side. Cristiano Ronaldo and co were unable to overcome a dogged defensive display, losing to a single goal in Lisbon.

Euro 2008 brought another quarter-final finish, and four years later, in Poland and Ukraine, another semi-final berth.

Portugal finally ended their long-running wait for a major title when they emerged victorious at Euro 201. They beat the France National Football Team in the final, with substitute Eder scoring the only goal in extra-time after Cristiano Ronaldo had been taken off through injury.

Euro 2020 proved a disappointment, with Portugal beaten in the Round of 16 by Belgium.
