By the time Portugal finally won their first UEFA European Championship title, they had repeatedly gotten painfully close to doing so previously. Indeed, even on the first occasion they made it to the finals, at Euro 1984, they did wonderfully well to reach the Semi-Finals only to lose to host France 3-2 in a thrilling match in Marseille.
Euro 96 saw them eliminated in the Quarter-Finals by the Czech Republic, and at Euro 2000, held in Belgium and the Netherlands, they were once again defeated by France in the Semi-Final, with Zinedine Zidane scoring the all-important extra-time goal to settle a 2-1 contest.
Euro 2004 is probably their most painful run in the competition. They hosted the tournament that year and started their push by losing their opening group stage game to Greece, only to bounce back and beat both England and the Netherlands to set up a repeat against the Greeks in the final in Lisbon.
In what was a one-sided affair, their opponents caught them on the break with Angelos Charisteas scoring the game’s only goal, despite it being the Greeks' only shot on target, while Portugal had a total of 17 efforts, albeit only five on target.
After strong runs in both 2008, in Austria and Switzerland, and then in 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, Portugal set their sights on finally winning the tournament in France in 2016.
Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates started sedately, drawing all their three group stage games before a Ricardo Quaresma goal saw off Croatia in the Round of 16, and penalties took care of Poland in the Quarters.
Ronaldo and Nani netted to see off Wales in the Semi-Finals, which led to a UEFA Final with France, their old enemy, and though Portugal lost Ronaldo early through injury, substitute Eder saw them home with a thunderous long-range goal after 109 minutes.
Italy first made it to the UEFA European Championship finals in 1968, when they hosted the tournament and proceeded to defeat Yugoslavia in a replay in Rome before then failing to qualify again until 1980.
In 1988 they reached the Semi-Finals, they were defeated by the Soviet Union, and their next decent showing came in 2000.
In Belgium and Holland, they were in great form and won their three group-stage games and then beat Romania and the Netherlands in the knockout stages to set up a tasty final against the French.
France arrived as the reigning FIFA World Cup title holders and were the strong favourites, but it looked as if Marco Delvecchio’s early second-half strike would win the game for the Italians, only for Sylvain Wiltord to level four minutes into injury time. David Trezeguet then fired home a great winner in extra time to clinch the trophy.
Italy returned to the final in 2012, but on this occasion, they were unceremoniously thumped by Spain 4-0 in Vienna.
Euro 2020, which took place in 2021 due to the coronavirus, saw Italy return to form in a big way.
Roberto Mancini’s side were certainly not among the favourites to succeed in the tournament, but their group-stage form put them very much on the right foot. Easy wins over Turkey, Switzerland, and Wales, all of which saw them keep clean sheets, put them in the Round of 16.
They made heavy work of beating Austria, Matteo Pessina scoring an extra-time winner, and they scraped past in-form Belgium to set up a Semi-Final with Spain.
The game ended level, and Mancini’s side then edged out their opponents on penalties to set up a mouthwatering final with England at Wembley Stadium.
Defender Luke Shaw gave the Three Lions the lead after just three minutes before Leonardo Bonucci equalized mid-way through the second half. Italy then took the game on penalties after Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka all failed to net their spot-kicks.
These two sides have never met in a UEFA European Championship finals match, and indeed up to 2023, they’ve only met in one qualifying campaign, with Italy winning both matches in 1987.
The first of the two games took place in Lisbon, and the great Alessandro Altobelli scored the winner just before the break. The return fixture, held at the San Siro, saw Italy win 3-0 with goals from Gianluca Vialli, Giuseppe Giannini, and Luigi De Agostini.
