Portugal vs Slovakia UEFA Euros Tournament Record

As previous winners of the tournament, Portugal can rightly be considered one of the best nations to have played in the competition. However, they may well have felt that their performances could have warranted even more than one title, given the consistency over the decades.

They first made it to the finals in 1984 but fell to hosts France, losing in extra time after a pulsating 3-2 defeat in Marseille in the Semi-Finals. In 2000, they once again lost to France in the last four, again to a very late winner.

2004 saw Portugal get even closer to their first success. As hosts, the Portuguese would have hoped for a better start to the competition, A Seleção das Quinas falling to a surprise group stage loss to Greece.

Wins against Spain and Russia saw them still finish top of their group, and they then defeated England in the Quarter-Finals and the Netherlands in the Semis to set up another clash with the Greeks.

With a cheering population behind them, Portugal were considered the big favourites to win in Lisbon, but they went down to an Angelo Charisteas goal which gave Greece a famous success.

2008 and 2012 ended in Quarter-Final and Semi-Final exits, respectively, and at Euro 2016, they once again reached the final.

Here they faced hosts France in Paris, with the chance to secure some payback for earlier losses to Les Bleus, and though they lost talisman Cristiano Ronaldo early through injury, Portugal were not to be left found wanting. Substitute Eder pummelled in an astounding extra-time strike to give them the title.

Slovakia have, as of 2023, qualified for the UEFA European Championship finals on two occasions.

The first of these was in 2016, and they performed admirably in France. They lost their opener against Wales before defeating Russia, with national team legend Marek Hamsik scoring the crucial second goal in a 2-1 victory.

They then needed to avoid defeat with England to secure a place in the last 16, and they did just that, eking out a goalless draw in Saint-Etienne. In the Round of 16, they were powerless to prevent Germany from securing a comfortable 3-0 win in Lille.

They qualified again for the next edition of the tournament, the delayed Euro 2020 finals, and started with an impressive 2-1 win over Poland. They then dropped to a narrow defeat by Sweden and then were thumped 5-0 by Spain in Seville and, therefore, were eliminated from the competition.

Portugal vs Slovakia Head-to-Head

These two sides have never played each other in the finals of a UEFA European Championship tournament but have gone into battle in four qualifiers.

Ahead of Euro 2000, Portugal defeated Slovakia twice, and ahead of the Euro 2024 finals, the Portuguese once again ran out winners twice.

On those occasions, Slovakia lost the first game, at home, 1-0, with Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes scoring the only goal of the game. The return game in Porto finished 3-2 to Portugal, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting twice.
