Portugal vs Denmark UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Portugal’s maiden UEFA European Championship success, which came in Euro 2016, came after a series of heartbreaking exits and was the first major tournament win that A Seleção das Quinas has managed.

Their first appearance in the finals of the tournament came in Euro 1984 where they impressed in the group phase before losing to hosts France 3-2 in a dramatic extra-time clash in the Semi-Finals of the competition.

Les Bleus repeated the feat in 2000, once again emerging triumphant after extra-time in the Semi-Finals, and four years later, when Portugal hosted the competition, they were shocked by Greece, who won a dour final by a single goal.

Euro 2016 saw forward Eder smash in a sublime long-range effort to defeat France and clinch the title and exact some much-needed revenge over their opponents.

Denmark have, on the whole, impressed when they have qualified for the UEFA European Championship finals. A fourth place finish came in 1964 and a Semi-Final exit occurred in 1984 but in 1992 they took things up a notch.

The Danes failed to qualify for the finals in Sweden but were drafted in after Yugoslavia were disqualified due to the ongoing regional war and the likes of Peter Schmeichel, Lars Olsen, Brian Laudrup, and John Jensen helped Richard Moller Nielsen’s side secure a memorable success.

Denmark beat France to secure a spot in the Semi-Finals where Henrik Larsen scored a double to secure a draw with the Netherlands, who then were defeated on penalties.

They then took on Germany in a game they were not expected to win, but win they did thanks to goals from Jensen and Kim Vilfort.

Denmark have struggled to come close to hitting those heights again but in Euro 2020, despite the near death of midfielder Christian Eriksen, they went on a marvellous run to the Semi-Finals.

There they lost to England at Wembley with Harry Kane scoring an extra-time winner.

Portugal vs Denmark Head-to-Head

Portugal and Denmark have met twice in UEFA European Championship finals clashes. The first of these games came in Euro 1996.

This clash took place at Hillsborough and saw Brian Laudrup put Denmark ahead before Sa Pinto leveled, with Portugal subsequently progressing to the knockout phase while their opponents failed to do so.

16 years later, the two sides played out a thrilling five-goal bonanza in Lviv. Goals from Pepe and Helder Postiga put Portugal two goals up before Nicklas Bendtner scored twice to square things up, only for winger Silvestre Varela to score the winner with three minutes of normal time to play.
