Portugal vs Switzerland History

Switzerland first featured at the finals of the UEFA European Championship in 1996, though the team would crash out at the group stage without picking up a single win from three games. Only on their third appearance at the tournament, at Euro 2008, did the Rossocrociati earn their first victory with a 2-0 triumph over none other than Portugal.

In 2016 Switzerland reached the knockouts of this competition for the first time. After ending 2nd in their group behind hosts France, the Swiss were narrowly beaten by Poland, on penalties, in the Round of 16. The Rossocrociati went one step further at Euro 2020 as they progressed to the quarter-finals.

The Portuguese have been considerably more successful at the European Championship, advancing the latter stages of most tournaments in recent times. Portugal debuted at the tournament in 1984 and reached the semi-finals, but lost out to hosts (and eventual winners) France, 3-2, in extra-time.

The Seleção progressed to the semi-finals at Euro 2000, missing out to eventual winners France, but would come even closer to European glory four years later on home soil. Portugal overcame England (on penalties) as well as the Netherlands to book a place in the final at Estádio da Luz, though the home side ultimately failed to defeat underdogs Greece.

Portugal suffered a heartbreaking semi-final defeat at Euro 2012, as they lost to eventual champions Spain on penalties. At long last the Portuguese clinched European honours for the first time in 2016 as they edged hosts France in front of 75,868 in Saint-Denis.

Switzerland and Portugal shared a group at Euro 2008, with the former earning a surprising 2-0 win. Despite this, the Swiss were subject to a group-stage exit while Portugal topped their group.

The sides later clashed at the last-16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Portuguese cruised to a 6-1 victory at the expense of the Rossocrociati as Gonçalo Ramos netted a hat-trick at the Lusail Stadium. Veteran defender Pepe was also on the scoresheet, as were Raphaël Guerreiro and Rafael Leão.
