Portugal vs Romania UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Portugal first made it through to the UEFA European Championship finals in 1984, and they did wonderfully well to make it through a tough group that also included Spain and West Germany.

Unfortunately, they then went up against an iconic French side that triumphed 3-2 in a thrilling Semi-Final in Marseille. Michel Platini scored a 119th-minute winner to knock out the Portuguese in that edition of the tournament.

Once again, the game went to extra time, but on this occasion, it was Portugal who netted a late winner. The hero that night was an unlikely one, substitute forward Eder scoring a breathtaking long-range effort to win in Paris.

Romania’s record in the UEFA European Championships is not in the same league as Portugal’s.

Tricolorii have qualified for the finals on five occasions as of 2023, and in four of those, they failed to get out of their group. Indeed, over the course of those four campaigns, they managed just one solitary win.

The anomaly was Euro 2000, when they did make a concerted impact in Belgium and the Netherlands.

With legendary attacking midfielder Gheorghe Hagi leading the team, Romania drew their opener with Germany before losing to Portugal. This set up a must-win clash against England, one Romania won in spectacular circumstances, with Ioan Ganea scoring an 89th-minute penalty to clinch a 3-2 success in Charleroi.

That set up a Quarter-Final with Italy, and goals from Fernando Totti and Pippo Inzaghi clinched a comfortable win in Brussels, knocking Romania out.

Portugal vs Romania Head-to-Head

The first time these two sides met in a UEFA European Championship finals game was in 1984 in a group stage clash in Nantes, France. On that occasion, Nene scored the winner that saw Portugal go through at the Romanian’s expense.

At Euro 2000, the two teams were once again in the same group, and a 94th-minute goal from Costinha saw Portugal beat Romania in Arnhem.
