Portugal vs Spain UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Portugal failed to qualify for the European Championships from the formation of the competition in 1960 all the way until 1984 when they finally made it to the finals in France.

They did well to secure safe passage through the group phase, at the expense of West Germany, and then met hosts France in the Semi-Final. In Marseille, the Portuguese were very unfortunate to lose 3-2 after extra time, with Michel Platini scoring the winner en route to a final success over Spain.

Portugal next qualified in 1996 and made it to the Quarter-Finals, and four years later, it was France who once again knocked them out in the Semi-Finals.

2004 saw Portugal host the tournament, and they did wonderfully well to beat England and the Netherlands to set up a seemingly simple final against Greece. However, Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side, who had lost to the Greeks in the group phase, were once again undone despite having 17 shots to their opponents' paltry tally of four, with Angelos Charisteas scoring with their only effort on target.

Euro 2008 and 2012 saw Portugal knocked out in the Quarter-Final and Semi-Final stages, respectively, and in 2016, they finally lifted the trophy.

Portugal drew all three of their group-stage games and then defeated Croatia, Poland, and Wales to set up another clash with France. This time they managed to secure that all-important win with sub Eder scoring a wonderful winner in the 109th minute in Paris.

Euro 2020 saw Portugal suffer their worst-ever finals run, with Belgium knocking them out in the Round of 16.

With three UEFA European Championship wins to their name, Spain are the joint most successful nation in the tournament (along with Germany). Their first came in 1964 when they hosted the Soviet Union in the final, with Marcelino scoring the winner in Madrid.

In 1984 they once again reached the final but were powerless to stop a great France side from winning the tournament.

By far, the strongest spell in the competition came between Euro 2008 and Euro 2012 when first Luis Aragones and then Vicente del Bosque led La Furia Roja to back-to-back titles.

Their run to the title in 2008 was imperious, with the Spanish side not conceding in any of their knockout matches, defeating Germany in the final thanks to a Fernando Torres goal in Vienna.

Four years later, the nucleus of the same side once again put all of Europe to the sword.

On this occasion, across six matches, they conceded just one goal and thumped Italy 4-0 in the final, with Torres again on the scoresheet in a very one-sided final in Kyiv. Spain haven’t got close to reaching the same heights since then but did still manage to get to the semi-finals at Euro 2020, losing to Italy on penalties.

These two big rivals have met on countless occasions in internationals and on three occasions in UEFA European Championship finals matches.

At Euro 1984, they played out a closely contested 1-1 draw in Marseille, with Carlos Santillana scoring late on for the Spanish.

In Euro 2004, the two sides were once again in the same group, and a Nuno Gomes goal gave the Portuguese a narrow win in Lisbon, which saw Spain knocked out of the competition.

It was Spain who got the upper hand in the Semi-Final clash in Donetsk in 2012 thanks to a 4-2 penalty shoot-out success, coming after a feisty goalless draw that saw nine players receive a yellow card.
