Portugal vs Finland UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Portugal are one of the most consistent performers in the history of the UEFA European Championships, though it did take them a while to qualify for their first finals tournament.

In each of the first six editions of the competition, they failed to make the grade, and then they made the grade to get through to the Euro 1984 finals in France. There they did very well to draw with West Germany in their opening match and then did likewise against Spain before defeating Romania to finish in second place and make it through to the Semi-Finals.

There they took on the hosts in Marseille, and despite Jordao scoring twice, it was the French that snuck into the final thanks to a late winner from Michel Platini, giving France a 3-2 victory.

In Euro 2000, they were once again in great form, winning all three of their group stage matches, beating both Germany and England, before beating Turkey to set up another Semi-Final with France.

In 2004 Portugal, as hosts, were hopeful of a first Euros crown, and they did well to get to the final and face a Greece side that had already beaten them in the European Championships group stage tickets. Incredibly the Greeks did so again in the final to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition.

Euro 2016 would prove to be the occasion when Portugal would finally break their jinx, and they did so in style, defeating France on their own patch in the European Championship final, with forward Eder, who had come on as a substitute, scoring a long-range cracker to seal a narrow 1-0 win in Paris.

Finland’s record in the UEFA European Championship could be best described as abysmal, but they did, at last, make it to the finals when they clinched qualification for the first time in Euro 2020.

Markku Kanerva’s side started incredibly well, beating Denmark in the opening group game in a game more well remembered for Christian Eriksen’s cardiac incident.

Finland then lost their second game to Russia by a single goal and then had to hope the footballing gods would be on their side for the final tranche of matches. The Finns lost to Belgium by two goals, and Denmark’s 4-1 win over Russia then knocked them out due to the record between the three teams (all of which had finished with three points).
