Portugal and France are two of the most attractive propositions in European international football, and the fanbase of both countries is huge, not just because of the success they have both achieved in the competition (both former winners) but also due to the incredible star power that they both possess.
Trying to get a ticket for this game may have proven very tough up to now. International matches, such as the finals of either the European championships or the FIFA World Cup, are something of a nightmare when it comes to buying tickets.
You could, in these instances, try your luck by entering UEFA or FIFA lotteries for tickets, or you could sign up with relevant international supporters clubs to gain access to seats for upcoming games, but neither of these routes is guaranteed to result in getting tickets, quite the opposite.
SeatPick, on the other hand, will offer you a fairly easy route to getting to the game. Our platform works with a wide range of trusted ticket sellers, and that means our users can access an aggregated service that gives fans the chance to check the market, compare prices, and find the best deals around.
Portugal’s record in the UEFA European Championship is an interesting one. Though they have repeatedly failed to make it to the finals, especially if you delve into the distant past, when they have done so, they have invariably done well.
As an illustration of this, you only have to take a look at their efforts in the first finals they qualified for, in 1984. Despite being drawn in a group with Spain and West Germany, as well as Romania, Portugal did marvellously well to draw with both big hitters and then defeat the Romanians to finish second.
Then, in the Semi-Finals, they met a very strong French side, the hosts, and were unfortunate to be knocked out 3-2 after extra-time with Michel Platini scoring the winner in the 119th minute of the game in Marseille.
It would take another 12 years for the Portuguese to return to the tournament, and in Euro 96, they made it to the Quarter-Finals. 2004 saw Portugal host the competition, and with a young Cristiano Ronaldo motoring along, they defeated England in the Quarter-Finals and the Netherlands in the Semi-Finals to set up a final with Greece.
Incredibly, the Greeks triumphed in Lisbon for a huge surprise victory that shocked Portugal.
2008 saw Portugal get to the Quarter-Finals again, and 2012 was a run to the Semi-Finals, and in 2016, they finally cracked the code.
Portugal defeated Croatia, Poland, and Wales to get to the Final, and there they met hosts France and edged them 1-0, with Eder scoring a spectacular winner to give the nation their first-ever major title.
France made it to the finals of the first-ever UEFA European Championships in 1960 but finished fourth out of four and then failed to make it back to the finals of the tournament until 1984 when they made it by virtue of being the hosts.
In those finals, France took Europe by storm with the likes of Michel Platini, Alain Giresse, and Jean Tigana at their peak as the hosts triumphed, winning the final against Spain 2-0 with Platini and Bruno Bellone scoring the key goals.
At Euro 96, France got all the way to the Semi-Finals before being beaten by the Czech Republic on penalties, but four years later, they got back to winning ways. At Euro 2000, two years after they had won their first FIFA World Cup, they beat Spain and Portugal to reach the final.
There they took on Italy in Rotterdam and looked set to be defeated by a Marco Delvecchio goal, only for Sylvain Wiltford to equalize deep into injury time, and then in extra time, David Trezeguet scored a famous winner to break Italian hearts.
2016 saw Les Bleus lose the final to Portugal, and in Euro 2020, they only made it to the round of 16 before losing to Switzerland.
These two sides are somewhat feisty when they go head to head, and they’ve met in three UEFA European Championship finals encounters.
The first of these came in Euro 84 in the semi-final in a game that saw Jean-Francois Domorgue put the French ahead in Paris before Jordao leveled late on. Domergue scored in extra-time after Jordao had put Portugal ahead, and then Michel Platini scored the winner with one minute of the 120 left to settle an enthralling contest.
In Euro 2000, a goal from Nuno Gomes put Portugal ahead in their Semi-Final clash with France before Thierry Henry scored early in the second half. It took an extra-time goal from Zinedine Zidane to secure another French win over the Portuguese and to move them one step closer to winning the tournament.
In 2016 Portugal got a measure of revenge against the French. The two sides met in the final in Paris in what was a very evenly matched encounter. Legendary forward Cristiano Ronaldo had to go off after just 25 minutes after suffering an injury, and that certainly gave the French the upper hand in front of a partisan crowd.
Prior to the game, no one would have predicted that Eder would be the match winner, but nonetheless, the sub thundered home a winner in the 109th minute, and Portugal saw out the game to collect their first major honour.
