Portugal vs Scotland UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Portugal qualified for their first European Championships finals at the seventh time of asking and then marched all the way to the Semi-Finals before losing to hosts and eventual winners, France. That loss was a painful one, coming via Michel Platini's winner late into extra time.

The Portuguese have a strong record in the competition. Up to 2023, in each of the eight finals they’ve reached, they’ve made it to the knockout phase on every occasion.

2004 saw them lose to Greece in the final, a result made even worse given Portugal were hosting the tournament.

2016 saw them finally get their hands on the trophy. Though Cristiano Ronaldo played a key role in their triumph, the decorated forward was actually subbed off injured early on. Eder proved the unlikely hero, smashing in a superb extra-time winner in Paris.

Scotland’s form in the competition is something of the polar opposite of their opponents.

They have only ever qualified for the finals on three occasions, the first of these coming in 1992 in Sweden. Andy Roxburgh’s side started the tournament with a narrow defeat against the Netherlands before losing 2-0 to Germany.

They did finish the competition with a great 3-0 win over the CIS, with Paul McStay, Brian McClair, and Gary McAlister all netting.

They made it to the finals again in 1996, and this time, they started with a credible draw with the Netherlands before taking on the old enemy, England, at Wembley. Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne scored in a 2-0 Three Lions win.

Scotland won their final group game, beating Switzerland 1-0 at Villa Park, and their four-point haul was not quite enough to see them through to the knockout stages.

Euro 2020, which was played in 2021, proved another disappointment. They lost to both the Czech Republic and Croatia but did draw with England, finishing bottom of their group.

Portugal and Scotland have never met in a UEFA European Championship finals competition but have faced each other in four qualifiers. In 1971, the two sides exchanged victories, and neither qualified for the 1972 tournament, and then, in qualifying for Euro 1980, the two teams won their respective home fixtures before both were once again eliminated.
