Portugal vs Hungary UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Euro 2016 saw Portugal end their lengthy wait for a first-ever major international trophy, and it came after a number of heartbreaking exits and losses in the tournament.

Hungary secured third-place and fourth-place finishes in the 1964 and 1972 European Championships, respectively, albeit this was back in the day when the finals of the tournament involved just four teams.

It would take another 44 years for Hungary to return to the finals, and in Euro 2016, they proved big underdogs who attracted a lot of interest from neutrals. They topped a group that also included Portugal before crashing out to Belgium, losing 4-0 in the Round of 16.

They once again qualified for the delayed Euro 2020 finals but finished bottom of their group on this occasion.

Portugal vs Hungary Head-to-Head

These two teams have a surprising amount of UEFA European Championship history, with the pair playing out some very exciting clashes.

In Euro 2016, they were drawn into the same group and came into the final set of matches with Hungary safely through to the knockout phase and Portugal needing something from the game in Lyon.

Former West Brom hero Zoltan Gera gave the Mighty Magyars the lead after 19 minutes before Nani equalized just before the break. Balázs Dzsudzsák then put Hungary back in the lead early in the second half before Cristiano Ronaldo fired home three minutes later to make it 2-2.

Balázs Dzsudzsák then had the temerity to once again score, putting Portugal in real danger of elimination before Ronaldo’s second ended the game 3-3.

The two sides were drawn together again in the Euro 2020 group phase, and this time Cristiano Ronaldo’s two-goal salvo capped an easy 3-0 Portugal win in Budapest.
