In 2000, as the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, they did well to qualify from their group behind a Spain side that had somehow defeated them 4-3 in a wildly exciting opening phase game.

They were then undone by the Netherlands in the quarter finals with Patrick Kluivert scoring a hat-trick in a thumping 6-1 win, with Marc Overmars also netting twice.
