Georgia history at European Championships
Georgia doesn't boast a great deal of history at the UEFA European Championship since the country became its own entity in the early 1990s.
After declaring independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Georgia failed to qualify for a Euro finals tournament (or any other major tournament) until 2024. The eastern European nation had reached the qualifying play-offs for the delayed 2020 tournament, but ultimately lost out to North Macedonia.
Georgia defeated Luxembourg in the play-off semi-finals before edging Greece on penalties to book their place at the Euro 2024 finals held in Germany.
Georgia's Fairytale Euro 2024
Georgia enjoyed a fairytale Euro 2024, reaching their first ever major tournament after beating Greece on penalties in the play-offs and then exceeding all expectations once there.
They lost their opener 3-1 to Turkey but bounced back with a 1-1 draw against Czech Republic (their first ever point at a major tournament) before pulling off the shock of the tournament: a 2-0 win over Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in Gelsenkirchen, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring after just 92 seconds and Georges Mikautadze adding a penalty to seal it. That result was the biggest upset in Euros history measured by FIFA ranking gap, with 74th-ranked Georgia toppling the sixth-ranked Portuguese.
Georgia's reward was a round-of-16 tie with Spain in Cologne, where the run finally ended in a 4-1 defeat to the eventual champions. They actually took the lead through a Robin Le Normand own goal, but Spain hit back through Rodri, Fabián Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo to send them home. Mikautadze finished as joint top scorer of the entire tournament with three goals (level with Jamal Musiala, Cody Gakpo, Ivan Schranz and Dani Olmo), and the campaign cemented Kvaratskhelia and his teammates as one of the great underdog stories of recent international football.
