History of the Luxembourg National Football Team

The Luxembourg Football Federation was founded 1908 and became a member of FIFA two years later.

The national team's first recorded international football fixture came against France in 1911; it ended 4-1 in favour of Les Bleus.

Luxembourg attempted to qualify for the 1934 World Cup, just the second edition of the tournament, but were heavily defeated by both France and Germany.

In 1954, Luxembourg gained UEFA membership. Up until that point, most of the team's matches were international friendlies versus the likes of Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Luxembourg continually tried (and failed) to qualify for the FIFA World Cup and later the UEFA European Championship, mostly falling short to more renowned nations in the sport.

The closest they came to qualifying for a major tournament throughout the 20th century was ahead of Euro 1996, when the Red Lions won just three of their 10 qualifiers but still missed out on the finals by some distance.

In September 2018, Luxembourg celebrated its highest-ever FIFA World Ranking of 82nd.

Having never previously qualified for a major tournament, Luxembourg sprung to life and remarkably finished 3rd in its qualifying group for Euro 2024. By doing so, the Red Lions advanced to the play-offs with a chance of making it to the final tournament hosted by Germany.

Luxembourg's Best Football Players

In 2018, Mario Mutsch became the first player to earn 100 international caps for Luxembourg. Daniel da Mota was the next to achieve this feat, hitting triple figures the following year.

Jeff Strasser made his international debut in 1993 and retired with 98 caps to his name. Laurent Jans has amassed 95+ appearances for Luxembourg, captaining his country more than 50 times.

Gerson Rodrigues, part of the current set-up, became the highest scorer in the history of the Luxembourg national football team when he scored his 17th international goal against Iceland in Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Other current players include Leandro Barreiro. The midfielder was aged 16 when he was signed by the youth team of German side FSV Mainz in 2021 and has since gone on to feature more than 125 times for the senior side. Barreiro has represented his national team on more than 50 occasions.

Also plying his trade in the Bundesliga, young attacker Yvandro Borges Sanches joined Borussia Monchengladbach. Christopher Martins Pereira, meanwhile, previously played for Olympique Lyon in Ligue 1.

Central defender Lars Gerson and goalkeeper Anthony Moris have also been involved with the Luxembourg national team in recent years.

The Luxembourg Stadium

The vast majority of Luxembourg home football games are played at Stade de Luxembourg. This 9,500-seater stadium is located in the capital, Luxembourg City, and opened its doors in 2021.

Prior to that, the national team contested its home-based events at Stade Josy Barthel, named after the country's former Olympic champion.
