Austria secured qualification for Euro 2024 after being drawn into a qualifying group together with Azerbaijan, Belgium, Estonia and Sweden. Under the tutelage of head coach Ralf Rangnick, the Austria national team picked up 19 points from their eight Euro 2024 qualifying matches.

Marcel Sabitzer and Michael Gregoritsch scored four goals apiece, while skipper David Alaba was a stronghold in defence for the Austrians.

Austria National Team History

Austria's record at the UEFA European Championships has vastly improved in recent editions, which isn't all that much of an achievement given their early attempts in the tournament.

Consistent Failure

The Austria national football team failed to make it to the finals in every edition from 1960 to 2008, and when they did finally play at the finals, it was because they were co-hosts along with Switzerland.

On that occasion, they started the competition with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Croatia in Vienna and then managed a last-gasp draw with Poland.

Loss to Germany

This meant they went into the final game of the group stage requiring something from their clash with Germany but lost out to a solitary Michael Ballack goal, meaning Austria failed to progress.

They once again failed to qualify in 2012, but in 2016 they finally successfully qualified via the qualification process, winning nine of their ten qualifying games.

In France, they started by losing to Hungary and then drew with Portugal before being beaten by Iceland and therefore finishing bottom of their group.

Round of 16

Euro 2020 saw Austria progress through the group stage for the first time, with the team beating both North Macedonia and Ukraine to set up a Round of 16 clash with Italy, which they were unfortunate to lose in extra time.

Austria have certainly improved in terms of their standing in the continent though arguably, they are still behind when compared to what their counterparts managed in the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 tournament (though their run did include a defeat to England).

The current crop of players available to coach Ralf Rangnick are perhaps among the best Austria have had in decades, offering fans genuine hope of enjoying seeing their country in action in Germany in summer 2024.
