Between 1960 and 2008, Austria failed to make it to the UEFA European Championship finals, with Das Team crashing out of the qualifying campaigns in 12 successive campaigns.

That run only came to an end for Euro 2008 on the basis of Austria not having to qualify as they were co-hosting the event with Switzerland. On home soil, they started by losing to Croatia in their opening game in Vienna before drawing with Poland.

At Euro 2000, as the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, they made it through to the Quarter-Finals, where they were then thumped 6-1 by co-hosts Holland, with Patrick Kluivert scoring a hat-trick and former Arsenal and Barcelona winger Marc Overmars grabbing two.

Austria and Serbia have never previously met in a UEFA European Championship clash but have met on four occasions in the qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.

Ahead of the 2010 World Cup, Serbia beat Austria both home and away.

In the qualifying phase of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice in a 3-2 win in Belgrade, and in the return fixture it was Austria who triumphed by the same scoreline in Vienna.
