Austria vs Hungary UEFA Euros Tournament Record

From 1960 to 2008, Austria failed to qualify for the UEFA European Championships, and when they finally booked their place in the finals at the 13th attempt, it was only because they were co-hosting the tournament with Switzerland.

Even when in front of their home fans, they struggled to make an impact and managed just a single point from their three group-stage games.

Eight years later, at Euro 2016, they finally qualified on merit but again could only grab a single draw from their three matches and were, therefore, swiftly eliminated. At Euro 2020, they did much better, getting out of their group before losing 2-1 to Italy after extra time in the Round of 16.

Hungary’s record in the competition is not much better than their opponents.

In 1964 and 1972, they made it to the finals but lost in the Semi-Finals on both occasions in the four-team set-up that was in place for the early editions of the tournament.

The Mighty Magyars then had to wait 44 years to return to the finals and then did so at Euro 2016 and performed admirably. They defeated Austria in their opener and then drew with both Iceland and Portugal to finish top of their group.

This led them to the Round of 16, where they took on Belgium in Toulouse and were outclassed, going down 4-0 to Marc Wilmots’ side. At Euro 2020, they once again qualified but failed to get out of their group of death, which included France, Germany, and Portugal.

Austria and Hungary have met in only one previous UEFA European Championship finals fixture, which came at Euro 2016.
