Austria vs Romania UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Austria first made an appearance at the UEFA European Championship finals at Euro 2008 and that came after 12 successive failed attempts at qualifying. It’s worth noting, however, that Das Team only qualified on that occasion due to the fact they were co-hosting the event with Switzerland.
Playing on home soil didn’t aid their progress, and they managed just one point from their three group games. Euro 2016 saw a similar level of success, in other words, an immediate elimination, but Euro 2020 proved a much better showing.
Austria beat both North Macedonia and Ukraine in their group stage games and then took on Roberto Mancini’s Italy and fought well to take the game to extra time before the Italians, who would go on to win the competition, edged to a 2-1 victory.
At the time of writing, Romania had qualified for the finals of UEFA’s premier national team tournament on five occasions, and in four of those, they were knocked out of the group stage, failing to win a single game across all four attempts.
Euro 2000 has been the one exception to the rule. There, in Belgium and the Netherlands, Romania needed to secure their first-ever tournament finals win in their last group game in order to progress to the knockout phase.
They took on Kevin Keegan’s England, and not many would have expected much from the Romanians in Charleroi.
At half-time, goals from Alan Shearer and Micheal Owen saw the Three Lions go 2-1 up, but Dorinel Munteanu immediately leveled early in the second half, and then in the dying minutes, Phil Neville gave away a silly penalty, and former Wolves man Ionel Ganea fired home to give Tricolorii a memorable win.
They then lost to Italy in the Quarter-Finals in Brussels.

Austria and Romania have only previously met in one UEFA European Championship campaign, and that came in the qualifying for Euro 1988.
Legendary former Real Madrid and Barcelona playmaker Gheorghe Hagi was among the goals in a 4-0 win for Romania in Bucharest, and in the return fixture, the two teams drew 0-0 in Vienna, and neither nation made it to the finals in Germany.
