Previous editions of the tournament would usually see a total of seven clubs take part, with staggered entrances based on the team's confederation.
The reigning champions of Oceania typically played in the play-off round against the national league champions of the host nation. The winners then advanced to the quarter-finals at which point the CAF Champions League winners enter together with the champions from Asia and North/Central America.
The two winning teams then proceeded to the semi-finals where they would face the UEFA Champions League winners and the Copa Libertadores champions, and the victors of each semi-final would play go on to play in the Club World Cup Final.
The forthcoming edition of the Club World Cup will be the dawn of a new era in this competition. Taking place in the United States, the 2025 Club World Cup will partially serve as a dress rehearsal for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The FIFA Club World Cup has undergone a major format change, with the pool of competing clubs expanding from seven to 32.
The new format will run exactly the same as the FIFA World Cup format from 1998-2022, with eight groups of four teams. The top two teams in each group will advance to the Round of 16, thereafter the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will follow as normal.
All the clubs that won their confederation's top club competition from 2021-2024 will be competing at the 2025 Club World Cup. This accounts for 18 teams and they'll be joined by another 13 clubs determined by a 4-year ranking within their confederation, as well as one team from the host country.
UEFA were allocated the most slots, with 12, of which nine were based on UEFA's 4-year ranking. CONMEBOL, the governing body of football in South America, received six slots while AFC, CAF & CONCACAF have four slots apiece. Oceania (OFC) will have just a single representative.
