The current crop of French stars are well placed to make a big impact at the UEFA Euro 2024 finals in Germany. With attacking talents such as Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappé and Olivier Giroud, Les Bleus stand a great chance of going all the way at Euro 2024.

Mbappé scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final and he has since been named captain of the France national team.

France National Team History

If you compare France to other national teams and measure according to success at the European Championships, then they certainly pack a punch.

The France National Team have called upon an abundance of world-class players in previous European Championships. Michel Platini, Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappé have all featured at some point for Les Bleus. It's no surprise fans clamour for French Euro Tickets every four years.

Les Bleus are certainly one of the most dominant sides across Europe, albeit due to one or two very high peaks among other less satisfying periods. So let's take a closer look at just what they have achieved in UEFA Euro history.

Inaugural Hosts

The French qualified for the first-ever European Championships in 1960, which they also hosted (but nonetheless also completed the qualification process) but were knocked out by Yugoslavia in the semi-finals, losing 5-4 in an astonishing game at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Slump

Incredibly, they then failed to qualify for any finals tournament for another 24 years, and even then, when they returned, it was in 1984 when they were once again hosts, and on this occasion, did not have to qualify for the competition.

Platini in his Pomp

National team coach Michel Hidalgo had a great side to draw upon for the finals and pulled off a memorable triumph thanks to the likes of Michel Platini, Alan Giresse, Jean Tigana, and Didier Six.

They won all three of their group games with aplomb and then faced Portugal in the semi-finals in Marseille, as Platini scored a late extra-time winner in a thrilling 3-2 win. France then took on Spain in the final and eased to a 2-0 win to be crowned European champions for the first time.

An underwhelming few years saw France fail to qualify for the 1988 event, beore crashing out at the group stage in 1992. Euro 1996 was something of an improvement, with France getting to the semi-finals before being beaten by the Czech Republic.

Euro 2000 Triumph

Euro 2000 was another landmark success for Les Bleus, coming two years after their maiden World Cup success and buoyed by the same incredible talents, including Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry.

At the finals in Belgium and the Netherlands, the France national team swept aside the opposition to line up an enthralling final against Italy in Rotterdam. The Italians looked as if they had won the game through a Marco Delvecchio goal, but Sylvain Wiltford scored in injury time to force extra-time and David Trezeguet then netted a famous winner.

Edged Out by Eder

Truth be told, since 2000, France have stuttered a great deal in European Championships. In 2016, when they were once again hosts, they were billed as the favourites to beat Portugal in the final, only to lose to a dramatic extra-time winner from Eder.

Star striker Antoine Griezmann ended the tournament as the top scorer, with six goals, while West Ham United's Dimitri Payet also excelled.

At Euro 2020, Les Bleus limped out at the Round of 16 stage, losing to Switzerland on penalties.
