France hosted the very first UEFA European Championships in 1960 but lost both their games in the four-team tournament. They then failed to qualify for any of the next five editions of the competition.
That run came to an end in 1984, and only because they once again hosted the tournament and, therefore, did not have to qualify.

Euro 2016, once again hosted by France, saw them get to the final again; on this occasion, they were the ones outdone in extra time, with Eder firing home the winner from long range for Portugal.
Switzerland have struggled for form in the UEFA European Championships, with their first qualification for the finals coming at the ninth attempt. At Euro 96, they managed just one point in the group phase and therefore went no further.
Similar failures came in 2004 and 2008, but in Euro 2016, they ended this run by getting to the Round of 16, where they lost to Poland on penalties.
Euro 2020 saw the Rossocrociati secure their best-ever finish. A four-point haul got them through their group, and they then pulled off a surprise win over France in the Round of 16 before losing out to Spain via spot-kicks in the Quarter-Finals.

The game then went to penalties, and after nine successful spot-kicks, Kylian Mbappe failed to find the back of the net, which meant the Swiss had pulled off a shock victory to take them to the Quarter-Finals.
