France vs Albania UEFA Euros Tournament Record
France hosted the very first UEFA European Championship, having qualified by right, but then suffered a dramatic Semi-Final loss to Yugoslavia, with their opponents coming back from 4-2 down to win 5-4 in Paris.
They failed to make it to any of the next five tournaments but automatically made it to Euro 1984 as hosts. At those finals, the likes of Michel Platini, Didier Six, Joel Bets, Alain Giresse, and Jean Tigana led the French to a famous title success.
They beat Portugal in the Semi-Finals before easing past Spain 2-0 in the final in Paris, Platini and Bruno Bellone firing in the goals in that success.
They missed out on Euro 1988 and were poor in Euro 1992 but got back into gear in England at Euro 1996. There, they marched through their group and past the Netherlands in the Quarter-Finals before losing to the Czech Republic in the Semi-Finals after penalties.
At Euro 2000, they triumphed again, with much of the 1998 FIFA World Cup winning squad putting in a great shift as they saw off Italy in a dramatic final in Amsterdam. Italy were 1-0 up through Marco Delvecchio and seemingly set to take the title, only for substitute Sylvain Wiltford to score a 94th-minute goal to take the game to extra time.
David Trezeguet, another sub, fired in the winner to secure a famous comeback triumph.
Quarter-Final losses came in 2004 and 2012, sandwiching a group stage exit in 2008, and Euro 2016 was once again hosted by the French.
They looked well placed to pick up a third title, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud, Paul Pogba, and Hugo Lloris aiding their push to the final, where they met Portugal.
Didier Deschamp's side went into the game as favourites, and when Cristiano Ronaldo went off injured after just 25 minutes, they were even more likely to succeed, but try as they might, they couldn’t get the goal that their dominance deserved. In the end, they were beaten when Eder, on as a substitute, scored a cracking long-range winner in extra-time.
Albania’s UEFA European Championship record makes for poor reading.
They never got even close to qualifying for the finals of the competition for over 50 years but finally ended that run when Albania edged into the Euro 2016 tournament.
At the tournament, they fell to losses against Switzerland and France before defeating Romania in the final group game and, therefore, avoided the shame of finishing bottom of Group A.
