France vs Romania UEFA Euros Tournament Record
France hosted the very first UEFA European Championship as one of the four clubs that qualified for the tournament in 1960. They then suffered a surprise Semi-Final loss to Yugoslavia; despite being 4-2 up with 15 minutes to play, they crashed out 5-4.
Their next involvement in the finals didn’t come until 1984, when they were once again hosts and, on this occasion, did not need to secure qualification on merit. Michel Hidalgo then led his high-quality side, who had done so well in the 1982 FIFA World Cup, to the title.
Michel Platini racked up two group-stage hat-tricks before scoring in the Semi-Final against Portugal and then the final against Spain.
They suffered a horrendous qualifying campaign for the next edition, winning just one of their eight games, but bounced back to win all eight ahead of the finals Sweden in Euro 1992 but went out in the group stage.
Their next decent run came in England at Euro 96, where they lost to the Czech Republic on penalties in the Semi-Finals.
Euro 2000 saw the nucleus of their 1998 FIFA World Cup-winning side put on a show as France clinched their second UEFA European Championship crown. They did so by battling back from a goal down to defeat Portugal in the Semi-Finals and repeated the feat against Italy in the final in Amsterdam.
Euro 2004 and 2014 saw them eliminated in the Quarter-Finals, and the tournament in Austria and Switzerland in 2008 proved a disaster, with France failing to win a single game.
France hosted the European Championships for a third time in 2016 and once again impressed in front of their own fans. They finished top of their group, conceding just one goal from the penalty spot, and then eased past the Republic of Ireland, Iceland, and Germany to book a final against Portugal at the Stade de France in Paris.
The game was something of a one-sided affair, especially once Cristiano Ronaldo was subbed off with an injury mid-way through the first half. However, the Portuguese held strong, and substitute Eder fired home a long-range belter in the 109th minute to win the game.
Romania have taken part in five UEFA European Championship finals, but on four of those occasions, they have failed to get out of their group and not win a single game in the process.
The exception to this rule came in 2000 when they pulled off a stunning win over England in their last group game, thanks to a late winner from Ioan Ganea. That victory saw Romania go through, and England were knocked out.
They faced Italy in the Quarter-Finals in Brussels, with Francesco Totti and Pippo Inzaghi scoring in an easy 2-0 win.

France and Romania have met in UEFA European Championship clashes on seven occasions.
The first of these to take place in the finals of the tournament came at Euro 96. The two sides played out a hard-fought game at St James’ Park, with Christophe Dugarry netting the winner.
The next finals clash was in 2008 when the two teams drew 0-0 in Zurich, and neither team progressed past the group phase.
The third finals clash took place in Paris, with Olivier Giroud and Dimitri Payet scoring in a 2-1 France win in the opening game of the competition.
