France vs Austria UEFA Euros Tournament Record

France are two-time winners of the UEFA European Championships and were the host for the inaugural competition in 1960, where they finished fourth. They didn’t qualify for the finals again until 1984, when they were once again hosts, and on this occasion, they put in a show-stealing performance.

France were knocked out in the Quarter-Finals in both 2004 and 2012 and once again reached the final at Euro 2016, another tournament that they hosted. This time, it was Portugal who secured some revenge for previous losses, with Eder scoring the winner in Paris.

Austria took quite some time to qualify for the UEFA European Championship finals for the first time, failing to do so in their first 12 attempts before finally doing so in 2008, albeit as co-hosts.

On that occasion, they mustered just one point in the group stage and were therefore eliminated. They finally made it to the finals on merit for Euro 2016 but once again managed just a draw from their three group games.

Euro 2020 saw Austria secure their first-ever finals tournament win, which came against North Macedonia. They also beat Ukraine and, therefore, got to the Round of 16, where they were unfortunate to lose to Italy in extra time.

The only time that these sides have met in the UEFA European Championship, both in qualifying or the finals, was ahead of the 1960 tournament. On the occasion, France beat Austria on both occasions.

In the first encounter, they won 5-2 in Paris, with the great Just Fontaine scoring a hat-trick, and the return fixture in Vienna finished 4-2 to the French.
