France vs Finland UEFA Euros Tournament Record

France have twice won the UEFA European Championships and have also come close to adding a third title on occasion.

That first success came in 1984 when they were the hosts of the competition. That success was greatly aided by a superb series of displays from forward Michel Platini. The Juventus man racked up nine goals in five games to help his side to the title, including netting in the final against Spain during a 2-0 win in Paris.

Their second success came at Euro 2000 when a side including legends such as Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry beat Portugal in the Semi-Finals before edging out Italy in the final in Amsterdam. Both those wins came in extra time, with David Trezeguet firing in the all-important winner against Italy.

At Euro 2016, another tournament that was hosted by France, Les Bleus marched into the final as the favourites, and when Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo went off injured after just 25 minutes, no doubt Didier Deschamps, former World Cup winning player and then national team coach, felt his side would have enough to romp to a third success.

However, Portugal had other ideas, and despite incessant pressure from the French, it was Eder who scored the only goal of the game, firing home from long distance to clinch it for Fernando Santos’s side.

Finland have only qualified for the UEFA European Championship finals on one occasion, and that came in Euro 2020 after 52 years of trying (having not entered the first two editions of the competition).

Once in the finals, the Finns got off to a flyer, beating Denmark in their opener during a game that is now more well remembered for Christian Eriksen’s cardiac event. Sadly, Finland then lost to both Russia and Belgium and were, therefore, knocked out.

France and Finland have never faced each other in the UEFA European Championship, though they have met in a number of FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

As of 2011, the two teams have played 11 times, with France winning 10 of those and scoring 22 goals in the process. Their one loss came in a friendly in 2020 when Marcus Forss and Onni Valakari scored in an unexpected 2-0 win in Paris.
