France vs Ukraine UEFA Euros Tournament Record

France hosted the 1960 UEFA European Championships, the inaugural competition, but somehow managed to lose their Semi-Final against Yugoslavia in what was then a four-team finals competition.

They were 4-2 up against their opponents but lost 5-4 in Paris and the Soviet Union, then duly beat the Yugoslavs in the final four days later.

That loss must have hit France hard because they didn’t qualify for the tournament for each of the next five editions. They finally returned to the finals in 1984, but only by virtue of being the hosts and, therefore, on this occasion, not having to qualify.

Their next visit to the UEFA European Championship Final came in 2000, a tournament hosted by both Belgium and the Netherlands. There Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and co. waltzed into the final and beat Italy in dramatic fashion.

France were down by a goal and set to lose until soon-to-be Arsenal forward Sylvain Wiltord came off the bench and scored a 94th-minute equalizer.

Juventus favourite David Trezeguet, another substitute, fired home the winner in extra time.

Les Bleus made it to their third final at Euro 2016 but were downed in their own backyard by Portugal, with Eder scoring an extra-time winner at the Stade de France in Paris.

Ukraine’s first involvement in the UEFA European Championship Finals came in 2012 when they co-hosted the tournament with Poland.

Two goals from national hero Andriy Shevchenko saw Ukraine come from behind to beat Sweden in their first game before a loss to France set up a must-win clash with England, which they duly lost when Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game in Donetsk.

Four years later, Ukraine qualified for the first time on merit but lost all three of their group games in France.

Euro 2020 proved far more successful, with Ukraine getting out of their group before beating Sweden in the Round of 16. They were then handed a thumping in the Quarter-Finals by England, with Harry Kane scoring twice in a 4-0 win in Rome.

Ukraine and France have met in five UEFA European Championship matches, albeit four of them coming in the qualifying leading up to the tournament.

The one time they did battle in the finals took place at Euro 2012. Jeremy Menez and Yohan Cabaye scored the goals in a comfortable 2-0 win for France in Donetsk, and they then qualified from the group while Ukraine failed to do so.
