A change of management in September 2023 meant new head coach Julian Nagelsmann had only a handful of months to prepare the Germany national team for the Euro 2024 tournament on home soil.

Germany National Team History

Germany have competed in every UEFA European Championship finals tournament since 1972 and almost always made it deep into the knockout stages. Let's take a closer look at what they have achieved in Europe's premier national team tournament.

They have an impressive record in the tournament, with many world-class players taking to the field in their famous white jerseys. Stars such as Oliver Kahn, Gerd Muller, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Lothar Matthaus and Miroslav Klose are just a few names that immediately spring to mind.

Having not entered the competition in 1960 and 1964, West Germany (as they were then known) failed to then qualify for the finals in 1968.

Instant Success

In 1972 West Germany qualified for the finals in Belgium, and they beat England in the two-legged quarter-final before defeating Belgium in the semis and then, took on the Soviet Union in the final in Brussels and won 3-0, with legendary forward Gerd Muller scoring twice.

Four years later, they reached the final again and found themselves two goals down within 25 minutes to Czechoslovakia, and once again, Gerd Muller netted, and West Germany secured a 2-2 draw before, surprisingly, losing on penalties in Belgrade.

Victory in Rome

In 1980, in Italy, West Germany were once again victorious, edging out a strong Belgium side 2-1 in Rome to secure their second UEFA European Championship trophy.

In 1984 they failed to exit the group stage, and in 88, they were beaten semi-finalists.

In Sweden in 1992, they were expected to waltz to a win in their final against a Denmark side that had only managed to qualify due to the outbreak of war in the former Yugoslavia; however, the Danes won and broke German hearts in Gothenburg.

Bierhoff to the Rescue

At Euro 96, the Germans beat host nation England in the semi-finals before defeating the Czech Republic National Football Team in the final at Wembley Stadium, with Oliver Bierhoff scoring a golden goal.

2000 and 2004 saw Germany fail to muster a single win, but in 2008, in Austria and Switzerland, they saw something of a return to form before losing to Spain in the final in Vienna, courtesy of a Fernando Torres goal.

In both 2012 and 2016, the Germans fell at the semi-finals stage, losing to Italy and France, respectively.
