Germany vs Norway UEFA Euros Tournament Record
No national team has won the UEFA European Championships more often than Germany, although as of 2023, the last time they did emerge victorious in the tournament was some time ago.
In 1972 and 1980, West Germany won the tournament, the first occasion coming very much off the back of great individual performances by forward Gerd Muller, while the second success came via a narrow win over Belgium.
Sandwiched in between these successes was a final defeat at the hands of Czechoslovakia, who beat West Germany on penalties in the 1976 finale.
1992, when unified Germany hosted the tournament, Denmark surprisingly won 2-0 in the final, thanks to goals from John Jensen and Kim Vilfort.
At Euro 1996, after beating the hosts England in the Semi-Final, Germany took on a strong Czech Republic side which included legends such as Pavel Nedved, Karel Poborsky, and Patrik Berger.
The Czechs took the lead just before the hour via a Berger penalty before Oliver Bierhof leveled with 17 minutes left. The game at Wembley then went to extra time, and after 95 minutes, Bierhoff struck a second, this being a golden goal, therefore ending the game immediately and earning Germany a third Euro title.
Euro 2008 was the last occasion Germany reached the final of the tournament, and they underperformed and went down to a Fernando Torres goal in a game that Spain dominated.
Semi-Final losses came in 2012 and 2016, and 2020 brought an unexpected Round of 16 exit.
Norway’s involvement in the UEFA European Championship finals have been sporadic, to say the least. They performed poorly in the qualifying stages for many tournaments, and in 1996, they were unfortunate to not make it to the finals in England.
They finished with 20 points from their ten qualifying games but were pipped to the playoffs by the Netherlands. In 2000 they finally made it to the finals for the first time after winning eight of their ten games.
In the finals, which were hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, Nils Johan Semb’s side were unfortunate. A goal from Steffan Iversen secured a memorable win over Spain in Rotterdam, but they then lost to the Former Republic of Yugoslavia in the next game and went into their final group game Slovenia needing a win to be sure of progress.
Norway only managed a goalless draw and therefore limped out at the first hurdle, and they have not qualified for the finals since, despite having some top-quality players with the likes of Martin Odegaard and Erling Haaland keen to end that run of ongoing failure.
