Germany vs Slovenia UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Germany’s success in the UEFA European Championship was pretty instantaneous. They first qualified for the finals in 1972 and then proceeded to win the tournament by beating the Soviet Union 3-0 in the final, with Gerd Muller bagging two goals.

Four years later, they made it to the final, where West Germany were surprisingly beaten by Poland on penalties after an entertaining 2-2 draw in Belgrade. The winning spot-kick was converted by Antonin Panenka, whose penalty was struck straight down the middle, a style of finish that is now known by his name.

1980 saw another UEFA European Championship Final for West Germany, their third in a row, and a brace from Horst Hrubesch saw them past Belgium in Rome.

At Euro 88, they were beaten by eventual winners, the Netherlands, in the Semi-Finals, and at Euro 1992, they suffered a surprise final defeat to Denmark. Germany were expected to ease to victory in Sweden, not least because their opponents had not even directly qualified for the finals but had only been invited to do so due to the expulsion of Yugoslavia due to war in the Balkans.

Euro 1996 proved more fruitful. Berti Vogts had a strong squad for those finals, and they edged past hosts England in the Semi-Finals before taking on the Czech Republic in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Germany fell behind on the hour mark when Liverpool attacker Patrik Berger scored a penalty, but substitute Oliver Bierhof scored to force the game into extra time and then scored a second to secure a golden goal success.

Both Euro 2000 and Euro 2004 saw a poor German side eliminated in the group stage, with no wins achieved in either tournament.

Euro 2008 saw Germany bounce back, reaching the final before losing to Spain in Vienna when former Chelsea forward Fernando Torres grabbed the winner.

Germany reached the Semi-Finals in both Euro 2012 and 2016 but only managed a Round of 16 exit at Euro 2020. The country’s run of 13 successive finals appearances is a tournament record.

Slovenia’s involvement in the competition is not quite so glittering. They have only appeared in one finals tournament, and that came at Euro 2000.

In their first finals match Slovenia were 3-0 up against the Former Republic of Yugoslavia after 57 minutes but conceded three goals in what proved to be a thrilling six-goal stalemate in Charleroi.

They then fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat by Spain before claiming a goalless draw from their final group game against Norway and finished bottom of their group.
