Germany vs Slovakia UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Up to Euro 2024, no nation has won the UEFA European Championship on more occasions than Germany. Two of their three wins came prior to reunification, with the first arriving in 1972 on their first occasion in the finals.
On that occasion, they defeated Belgium in the Semi-finals, with Gerd Muller scoring twice in a 2-1 win in Antwerp. Four days later, they took on the Soviet Union, and West Germany easily overcame their opponents 3-0, with Gerd Muller again scoring twice and Herbert Wimmers scoring the third.
Four years later, they faced Czechoslovakia in the final in Belgrade, and following an entertaining 2-2 draw, Antonin Panenka scored the key spot-kick, netting straight down the middle in a style that has since become named after the attacking midfielder.
In 1980 the consistent West German side once again featured in the finals tournament and beat Belgium 2-1 in the final to secure their second title.
In 1992, when unified Germany hosted the tournament, many expected Berti Vogts’ side to compete at the highest level, and they secured a hard-fought 3-2 Semi-Final win over Sweden, with Karl-Heinz Riedle scoring twice.
They then took on Denmark in the final, the Danes only qualifying for the tournament after the former Yugoslavia were banned due to the outbreak of war in the region, and again, Germany were the big favourites to win the competition.
In the final, John Jensen scored a superb long-range effort to put Denmark in the lead, and Kim Vilfort scored the second to complete a famous win for Richard Moller Nielsen’s side.
In 1996 Germany made up for that loss by first beating hosts England in the Semi-Finals before overcoming a strong Czech Republic side 2-1 at Wembley Stadium to win the tournament, their third title.
2008 saw Spain beat the Germans 1-0 in Vienna to win the UEFA European Championships, and Semi-Final defeats followed in the next two editions of the competition before a surprise Round of 16 exit in the delayed Euro 2020 competition.
In contrast, Slovakia don’t have the strongest record in the competition. 1996 was the first occasion the independent nation attempted to qualify for the tournament finals, and they failed in that endeavour in each of their first five attempts.
In 2016 they performed admirably to secure their first finals berth, and in France, they did themselves proud. They lost their first group-stage game against Wales but then battled back to beat Russia and draw with England, which was enough to get Slovakia to the Round of 16, where they were humbled by Germany 3-0.
They qualified again in 2020, the finals of which actually took place the following year, and they won their first group-stage game against Poland. They were then edged out by Sweden to set up a key game with Spain.
Spain wiped the floor with the Slovakians, winning 5-0 in Seville to end their hopes of another shot at a knockout phase run.

These two sides have met on a number of occasions, with their first two UEFA European Championship matches taking part in the qualifying process ahead of the 2008 finals.
Germany won both matches in that campaign, and their first finals fixture with Slovakia came in Lille. That Round of 16 match was a one-sided affair, with Jerome Boateng, Mario Gomez, and Julian Draxler all netting in a comfortable 3-0 victory.
