Germany vs Italy UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Both Germany and Italy have strong UEFA European Championship records.
Germany Euro 2024 have won the tournament on three occasions, the first two of which came prior to reunification.
In 1972 they beat the Soviet Union 3-0 in the final, with Gerd Muller scoring twice, and in 1980, West Germany edged out Belgium to win the tournament for a second time.
In 1996 Germany won the tournament again. This time they broke England's hearts by beating the hosts in the Semi-Final via penalties again before they beat the Czech Republic in the final at Wembley Stadium.
Italy Euro 2024 won the competition for the first time in 1968. They beat Yugoslavia in the final after a replay, with Gigi Riva and Pietro Anastasi scoring in a 2-0 win in Rome.
In 2000 they reached the final before losing to France in a thrilling encounter. Marco Delvecchio looked as if he’d given Italy a win before Sylvain Wiltord equalized in the 94th minute before David Trezeguet scored the winner in extra time.
In 2012 they reached the final again before they were thumped 4-0 by Spain, with David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres, and Juan Mata scoring in a one-sided game in Kyiv.
Italy finally won a second UEFA European Championships when they defeated England in the delayed Euro 2020 final. Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw gave the Three Lions an early lead before Leonardo Bonucci equalized mid-way through the second half.
England then saw Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka all miss their spot-kicks, handing Italy the title.
Germany vs Italy Head-to-Head
Germany and Italy have repeatedly clashed in major tournaments, and the first time they met each other in the UEFA European Championship Finals was in 1988. The two teams played the opening game of the tournament, and the match in Dusseldorf finished 1-1, with Roberto Mancini and Andreas Brehme both scoring.
In Euro 1996, they were drawn into the same group and played out a goalless draw that saw Germany go through to the knockout phase while Italy failed to go through.
In Euro 2012, the two teams met in the Semi-Final in Warsaw, with Mario Balotelli scoring two first-half goals before Mesut Ozil reduced the arrears in injury time, failing to mount a comeback and the Italians, therefore, booking their place in the final.
Four years later, Germany and Italy met in the Quarter-Finals, with the game ending 1-1 after 120 minutes, Ozil once again netting before Leonardo Bonucci equalized. An epic penalty shoot-out came next, with Matteo Darmian missing the decisive 18th spot-kick as Germany triumphed.
