Germany vs Ukraine UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Germany Euro 2024 has perhaps the most consistent record in the history of the UEFA European Championships. Between 1972 and 2024, West Germany and then as Germany, the national team has qualified for every finals tournament.

Their record in the competition during this period is second to none. Their three titles came in 1972, 1980, and 1996, and aside from these triumphs, they have reached the final on three other occasions and the Semi-Finals on another three tournaments.

Iconic forward Gerd Muller was instrumental in that first tournament win, scoring two goals in both the Semi-Final and Final clashes with Belgium and the Soviet Union in 1972, and in 1980 Horst Hrubesch scored twice in the final to win West Germany their second crown.

At Euro 96, hosted by England Euro 2024, Germany beat the Three Lions in the Semi-Final before doing likewise to the Czech Republic. As of 2024, that is the last time they have lifted the famous trophy, though not through want of trying.

2008 saw them edged out by Spain in the final in Vienna, and 2012 and 2016 saw Germany lose in the Semi-Finals. In Euro 2020, they were poor, however, falling away in the Round of 16.

Ukraine have qualified for the finals of the UEFA European Championship on three occasions, the first of which came when they co-hosted the event with Poland in 2012.

Legendary forward Andriy Shevchenko scored twice in their opening game as Ukraine beat Sweden. They then lost their second group game against France before taking on England in a must-win encounter, but a Wayne Rooney goal gave Roy Hodgson’s side the win.

In 2016 they once again qualified, this time by virtue of their playing exploits, but in France, they struggled, losing all three group games and failing to score a single goal.

Euro 2020 turned out to be Ukraine’s most successful tournament to date. Despite losing two of their three group games but beating North Macedonia, Ukraine made it through to the knockout phase.

In the Round of 16, a 120th-minute goal from Artem Dovbyk gave Ukraine a 2-1 win over Sweden to set up a Quarter-Final clash with England, but this proved a bridge too far with Gareth Southgate’s side scoring four times within the first 63 minutes and completing an easy win in Rome.

2016 proved to be the only occasion, thus far, that Germany and Ukraine have met in the UEFA European Championship. In Lille, first ​​Shkodran Mustafi and then Bastian Schweinsteiger netted in an easy 2-0 win.

Germany would go on to top the group, with Ukraine finishing rock bottom.
