Germany vs Turkey UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Germany Euro 2024 have won the UEFA European Championships on three occasions. The first of the trio of successes came in 1972, with Gerd Muller scoring twice in a comfortable 3-0 win over the Soviet Union in the final.
Eight years later, a brace from Horst Hrubesch put paid to Belgium’s hopes of winning the tournament, giving West Germany their second success.
Their first win as a unified Germany came in 1996 in England. The Germans beat the hosts in the Semi-Final via penalties (unsurprisingly) and then edged out the Czech Republic after Oliver Bierhof’s golden goal.
They have twice tasted defeat in the final of the competition. The first loss came in 1992 at the hands of Denmark and then in 2008 against Spain.
Given that Turkey Euro 2024 have not qualified for the UEFA European Championships that often, they have actually done pretty well in the competition.
1996 was the first time they qualified, and on that occasion, they slumped to three group stage defeats (against Portugal, Denmark, and Croatia), but in 2000 they got to the Quarter-Finals.
There, they lost to Portugal 2-0, with Nuno Gomes scoring twice in Amsterdam. They next qualified in 2008, and they went one better and forced their way past Croatia in the Quarter-Finals before losing to Germany in a thrilling Semi-Final.
2016 and 2020 saw Turkey fail to get out of the group phase on both occasions.
Germany vs Turkey Head-to-Head
These two nations have met countless times in qualifying action, but their one and only encounter in the finals of the UEFA European Championships came in the 2008 Semi-Finals.
Ugur Boral gave Turkey the lead after 22 minutes before Bastian Schweinsteiger leveled soon after. Miroslav Klose put the Germans back in front with ten minutes left before the Turks once again equalized, this time through Semih Senturk.
Philipp Lahm then dealt the killer blow with a 90th-minute winner in Basel to send the Germans through to the final, where they subsequently lost to Spain.
