Germany vs Austria UEFA Euros Tournament Record

With three triumphs to their name, no team has achieved more in the UEFA European Championships than Germany.

They have been remarkably consistent in Euros action ever since they first took part. The West Germany side first took part in the competition in 1972 and duly triumphed when they beat the Soviet Union 2-0 in the final in Brussels, with goal machine Gerd Muller netting in the clash.

They repeated the feat in 1980 when Belgium were the defeated opponents in Rome, with Horst Hrubesch scoring a brace to complete a 2-1 victory. In 1992, as unified Germany, they surprisingly lost to Denmark in the final but went on to pick up their third European Championship success in 1996.

A strong German side knocked out England in the Semi-Finals before defeating the Czech Republic in the final at Wembley Stadium, with Oliver Bierhof scoring a golden goal to complete the win.

2008 saw Joachim Low’s side defeated by Spain in the Final, and in 2012 and 2016, Germany tasted Semi-Final losses to Italy and France, respectively, and 2020 saw them uncharacteristically eliminated early on.

Austria’s record at the European Championships is patchy at best. It took the nation a great deal of time to finally qualify for the finals of the tournament, and they managed to do so for the first time in 2008, where they failed to get out of the group stage, and the same fate awaited the Austrians in 2016.

In 2020 they managed to get to the knockout phase for the first time and were narrow losers against Italy, going down 2-1 after extra time.

These two European neighbours have met on countless occasions, and by far, the most infamous clash between the two teams took place in the 1982 FIFA World Cup, where the two teams played out a 1-0 win to the Germans, a result that saw both teams go through to the next phase.

The ‘Disgrace in Gijon’ went down in infamy due to the fact that the two teams deliberately made no attempt to add to the scoreline after ten minutes, causing widespread consternation as Algeria were knocked out as a result of the 1-0 Germany win.
