Germany vs Romania UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Germany have won the UEFA European Championship on three occasions, the first two of which came prior to reunification.
In 1972, the first time they successfully qualified for the event, West Germany overcame the Soviet Union with relative ease, winning 3-0, with celebrated goal machine Gerd Muller netting twice.
Eight years later, they repeated the feat when they beat Belgium in the final, with Horst Hrubesh scoring both goals in a 2-1 win.
Their first taste of defeat in a UEFA European Championship final came in 1992 when they were shocked by Denmark on home soil. The Danes were only in the competition due to the expulsion of Yugoslavia due to war in the region, and they somehow defeated the Germans in the final to clinch a famous title.
In 1996, Germany defeated hosts England in the Semi-Finals before edging past the Czech Republic in the final at Wembley Stadium.
In 2000 and 2004, they uncharacteristically failed to qualify from the group phase, and in 2008, they got all the way to the final before losing to a Fernando Torres goal, which gave Spain the title.
Semi-final losses came in 2012 and 2016, while in the delayed Euro 2020 finals, they were eliminated in the Round of 16.
On the whole, Romania haven’t made the greatest impact on the UEFA European Championship scene. On five occasions, they have successfully qualified for the tournament, but on four of those tournaments, they’ve failed to get out of their group.
The exception to that rule came in 2000. In Holland and Belgium, Romania impressed with a final group stage win over England, which saw them through to the Quarter-Finals. There, they failed to keep up their solid form and were downed by Italy 2-0.
Germany vs Romania Head-to-Head
Germany and Romania first met in the UEFA European Championship finals in 1984, where two goals from Rudi Voller saw West Germany defeat the Tricolorii in Lens.
They met for a second time in 2000, with both teams drawn together in the group phase, and Viorel Moldovan gave the Romanians an early lead before Mehmet Scholl leveled as the sides played out a 1-1 draw in Liege.
