Germany vs Netherlands UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Germany Euro 2024 are one of the most successful nations in the history of the UEFA European Championships, and they first won the tournament in 1972, with Gerd Muller being key to their success. Eight years later, they repeated the feat to win the tournament in 1980.
Their third triumph came in England in Euro 1996. It was their first success since reunification and saw Germany defeat the hosts in the Semi-Finals after England, unsurprisingly, fluffed their lines in the penalty shoot-out.
Two goals from Oliver Bierhoff, including a golden goal, saw off the Czech Republic in the final at Wembley Stadium.
In 2008 they reached the final only to lose to Spain, with Fernando Torres scoring the only goal of the game. Their more recent record has been patchy, with Germany only making it to the Round of 16 in Euro 2020.
The Dutch also have a strong record in the competition, with their maiden win coming in 1988, with the likes of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, and Frank Rijkaard playing a key role in their success, which was completed after a 2-0 final win over the Soviet Union.
The Netherlands Euro 2024 were defeated at the Semi-Final stage in 1992, 2000, and 2004, losing to Denmark, Italy, and Portugal, respectively.
In more recent tournaments, they have struggled, failing to qualify in 2016 and being knocked out in the Round of 16 in Euro 2020.
Germany vs Netherlands Head-to-Head
When these two national teams take on each other, they are usually feisty affairs, and the first encounter in the UEFA European Championships came in 1980 when they were paired in the early group stage.
On that occasion, Klaus Allofs scored a hat-trick as Germany edged out the Dutch 3-2, and the two met again in 1992, once again in the group stage.
Goals from Frank Rijkaard, Robert Witschge, and Dennis Bergkamp saw Holland win 3-1, with both teams securing qualification to the knockout phase in that tournament.
In 2004, in Porto, the two teams played out a cagey 1-1 draw, and in 2012, in Kharkiv, a Mario Gomez brace saw Germany beat the Netherlands 2-1, with both these games also taking place in the group phase.
