Germany vs Spain UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Germany are three-time winners of the UEFA European Championship, two of which came prior to unification and one since, and Die Mannschaft, as they are known in Germany, are one of the most consistent performers in the tournament.

Their first success came in 1972, which was the first time they had qualified for the tournament, which was far shorter in duration than it is today. The Finals themselves involved West Germany playing just two games.

In the Semi-Final, they defeated Belgium thanks to a double from Gerd Muller, and they then dealt with the Soviet Union in the UEFA European Championship Final with relative ease. It took another Gerd Muller brace and a third goal from Herbert Wicker to complete a 3-0 win in Brussels.

In 1980, they won the tournament again, this time defeating Belgium in the final, with Horst Hrubesch scoring twice in a 2-1 win in Rome.

Their third success came in Euro 1996 when they beat England, the hosts, in the Semi-Finals before edging out the Czech Republic thanks to a golden goal from Oliver Bierhof in extra time.

Since then, Germany have reached the Semi-Final twice and were defeated finalists in another tournament, and they are regularly considered among the favourites for the tournament.

Spain, too, have won the UEFA European Championships on three occasions, the first of these coming in 1964, in the second edition of the tournament.

Spain, who were the hosts that year, defeated the Soviet Union 2-1 in the final at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. In 1984, they did well to reach the final of the tournament before losing to a strong French side that saw star Michel Platini finish as the top-scorer.

They would go on to win back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012. The second of these successes came after a convincing 4-0 win over Italy in Kyiv.

Germany vs Spain Head-to-Head

These two have met in many UEFA European Championship matches, and the first campaign that saw them go head to head was in 1976 in the qualifying for the tournament.

The first leg ended 1-1 in Spain before West Germany eased to a 2-0 win in Munich to secure their place in the finals.

In 1988, when the tournament was hosted by Germany, the two teams were drawn into the same group stage. The home side saw off their opponents 2-0 in Munich, with Rudi Voller scoring both goals, with Spain subsequently knocked out of the competition.

In 2008, Spain got their revenge for these defeats as they took on Germany in the UEFA European Championship Final. Fernando Torres scored the only goal of the game in what was, in truth, a fairly one-sided affair.
