Germany has an excellent record in the UEFA European Championships. They have won the tournament three times, a feat which only Spain has replicated. With six final appearances, Germany have taken part in more European Championship finals than any other nation.
Die Mannschaft first won the competition in 1972, beating the Soviet Union 3-0 in the final. Their next win came eight years later, beating Belgium 2-1 in the 1980 showpiece final in Rome.
Germany’s record-breaking third European Championship was won in 1996, triumphing over Czech Republic in the final. The Germans were trailing 1-0 when Oliver Bierhoff came off the bench in the 69th minute. The 28-year-old striker equalised with a header and scored a match-winning golden goal in the 95th minute.
Portugal have won the tournament only once, but have tasted success more recently than their German counterparts. They reached the final in Euro 2004, but lost 1-0 on home soil to Greece.
Twelve years later, Portugal won the trophy for the first time in their history, beating France 1-0 after extra-time in the final. Eder scored the only goal of the game in the 109th minute to break French hearts. Portugal’s record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo was the only player to feature in the starting XI of both the 2004 and 2016 finals.

Germany and Portugal have faced off in some thrilling encounters in the UEFA European Championships. Their most recent meeting came in the group stage of Euro 2020, with Germany winning 4-2 in a six-goal thriller.
Another fantastic encounter took place in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Michael Ballack, and Miroslav Klose scored as Germany beat Portugal 3-2 in a scintillating 90 minutes of football.
