England National Team History

When it comes to the performances of the England national football team at the UEFA European Championship, it would be fair to consider their achievements to be something of a mixed bag.

Many footballing superstars have tried and failed to secure European Championship glory for the Three Lions. Bobby Charlton, Alan Shearer, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have all suffered heartache in this tournament.

In 1968, the first time England qualified for the finals, they secured a third-place finish, albeit this came back in the days when the tournament only comprised of four teams.

Relative Failure

England didn't qualify for the 1972 nor the 1976 editions, and also didn't feature at the Euro finals in 1984. At the events which did feature the Three Lions (1980, 1988, and 1992) they failed to progress beyond the group stages.

England managed just a solitary win across those three Euro tournaments, exiting winless at the 1988 finals in Germany and again four years later in Sweden.

Two decades of failure at national level, following the remarkable triumph at the 1966 FIFA World Cup on home soil.

Renaissance at Home

Euro 1996 was, however, an entirely different kettle of fish. Terry Venables was in the hot seat as England hosted the tournament. Though they started with an uninspiring draw against Switzerland, wins over Scotland and the Netherlands saw the host nation ease through the group stage.

Euro '96 Heartache

A goalless draw with Spain in the quarter-finals concludeed with a rare penalty shoot-out win at Wembley Stadium. England then went up against old enemy Germany in the semi-finals, where they sadly lost on penalties after Gareth Southgate, later to be England manager, missed his decisive spot-kick.

The 2000 tournament in Belgium and the Netherlands saw another group stage exit for England, before the 2004 finals resulted in another penalty shoot-out loss, this time to hosts Portugal.

Underwhelming Performances

2008 resulted in a failure to qualify, while four years later saw another shoot-out loss, this time in the quarter-finals against Italy.

At Euro 2016, the Three Lions suffered a shock defeat to Iceland in the Round of 16, but Euro 2020 offered something of salvation.

More Heartbreak at Euro 2020 & Euro 2024

The Euro 2020 finals, which were delayed to 2021, saw Gareth Southgate's side produce some scintillating form. Wins over Croatia and the Czech Republic, and a draw with Scotland, meant England topped their group.

England then impressively saw off heavyweights Germany in the Round of 16 before they thrashed Ukraine in the quarter-finals, followed by a narrow victory over Denmark in the semis to earn their first-ever Euro final place. Despite taking the lead through Luke Shaw in the opening two minutes, England yet again lost on penalties, with Italy emerging victorious.

Southgate's squad impressed greatly during the tournament, and their loss in the final, after the penalty misses from Manchester United pair Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford and Arsenal's Bukayo Saka, was not indicative of their overall performance, which was exemplary.

The 2020 & 2024 editions were the closest the England national football team have come to winning the tournament. The Three Lions were beaten by Italy, on penalties, in the Euro 2020 final before a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
