England vs France History

It doesn't get much bigger than this as two of the best teams on the international scene go head-to-head. Despite the importance of England in the history of professional football, the Three Lions have remarkably never been crowned champions of Europe. England ended runners-up to Italy at Euro 2020, having progressed past the semi-finals for the first time.

The Three Lions also previously lost out to eventual champions Germany at Euro 1996, 6-5 on penalties, having played out a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium.

Meanwhile, France have claimed this title at least twice before. The French hosted the inaugural edition of this tournament in 1960, but it wasn't until 1984 when Les Bleus hoisted a maiden European crown. Only eight teams took part as Michel Platini scored nine goals to steer his team to European success. France defeated Portugal in the semi-finals and then overcame Spain, 2-0, to lift this famous trophy for the first time.

France reclaimed the title at Euro 2000 as David Trezeguet scored the golden goal in the final versus Italy. The match ended 1-1 in regular time, thanks to Sylvain Wiltord's late equaliser, before Trezeguet delivered the all-important goal on the cusp of half-time in extra-time.

The French hosted the Euro 2016 finals and came within touching distance of celebrating success on home soil. Les Bleus advanced to the final where they met Portugal. The sides couldn't be separated after 90 minutes and extra-time followed, in which Portuguese forward Eder found the back of the net from distance.

England vs France Head-to-Head

The first time these teams met at a major tournament was during the group stage of the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Roger Hunt scored twice in a 2-0 win for England, as the host nation went on to capture World Cup glory that year. The next time the English and French would clash at a major tournament was at the 1982 World Cup, once again at the group stage. Bryan Robson netted twice as the Three Lions ran out 3-1 winners.

France recorded a precious victory over England at Euro 2004, courtesy of two late goals from Zinedine Zidane. Eight years later the teams met again in the European Championship, but settled for a 1-1 draw after Samir Nasri cancelled out Joleon Lescott's opener.

One of their most recent encounters would be the 2022 World Cup quarter-final clash between England and France. Aurelien Tchouameni gave Les Bleus the lead before Harry Kane converted from the penalty spot to restore parity. Kane was unable to replicate his successful spot-kick as he missed a late penalty, and Olivier Giroud bagged the match-winning goal to send France on their way to the World Cup final.
