England and Belgium UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Despite the long list of superstars to have played for England over the years, the Three Lions are still on the hunt for their inaugural UEFA European Championship title. They came agonisingly close at Euro 2020, but lost to Italy on penalties in the final.
In Euro 1996, England reached the semifinals of the competition on home soil, where they faced off against arch-rivals Germany in a dramatic showdown. Germany emerged victorious via a penalty shootout after a tense encounter that ended 1-1. Gareth Southgate, who would go on to manage the England national team, saw his penalty saved to send Germany through.
England got even closer to glory at Euro 2020. They reached the European Championship final for the first time in their history, only to face another shoot-out heartbreak at Wembley Stadium. The Three Lions went 1-0 up through Luke Shaw, but Italy clawed themselves back into the game through a Leonardo Bonucci equaliser. The teams were inseparable after 120 minutes and the match was decided by a penalty shootout. England scored their first two penalties before Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka all failed to convert from the spot.
Belgium have also reached one UEFA European Championship final, losing 2-1 to Germany in the 1980 showpiece match in Rome. The match was perfectly poised at 1-1 before Horst Hrubesch scored an 88th minute winner to break Belgian hearts.
Between 1984 and 2016, Belgium only took part in one Euro tournament. They automatically qualified for Euro 2000 because it was held on home soil, but they were eliminated at the group stage. At Euro 2016 and Euro 2020, Belgian’s star-studded squad could not get past the quarter-final stage.
