The match proceeded to a penalty shoot-out and England’s talented young forwards failed to hold their nerve from the spot.

In contrast, Spain have enjoyed remarkable success in the UEFA European Championships. They’ve won the tournament on four occasions (1964, 2008, 2012, and 2024), making the Spanish the most successful team in the history of the European Championship.

Playing tiki-taka football, La Roja dominated international football between the years 2008-2012. Their 4-0 victory over Italy in the Euro 2012 final remains the biggest winning margin in any World Cup or European Championship final.

England and Spain famously faced off at the Euro 1996 quarter-finals at Wembley Stadium. The two teams were inseparable after 120 minutes of football, and the 0-0 scoreline was a repeat of their meeting at the 1982 FIFA World Cup. England progressed to the semi-finals of Euro 1996 after Fenando Hierro and Miguel Nadal failed to beat David Seaman in the shoot-out.

The teams also shared a group at Euro 1980 as England ran out 2-1 winners against the Spanish. Ultimately neither country advanced from the group, which also comprised of Italy & Belgium.
