About England vs Romania Euro 2024 Tickets

The UEFA European Championship is the second biggest international football tournament in the world, and the clamour for tickets illustrates that fact. What began as a finals tournament with just four teams in 1960 has grown to one that has 24 teams, and arguably, it’s a harder competition to win than the FIFA World Cup due to the relative lack of poor sides when compared to that event.

Fans seeking out tickets for the finals of the tournament could join millions of others in the UEFA ballot, but take into account that when doing so, you won’t know which two teams will be playing in the game you apply for, which is something of a problem.

The second release of tickets, which comes after the tournament draw, entails even more fans desperately fighting it out to win the random draw, leaving a huge majority disappointed.

England vs Romania UEFA Euros Tournament Record

England first qualified for the UEFA European Championship finals in 1968 but ended the tournament in third place out of four.

They failed to get out of their group in 1980, 1988, and 1992, and it was only at Euro 1996 that they really started to make a genuine impact in the tournament.

Terry Venables had a side jam-packed with talents, including the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Paul Ince, and Alan Shearer, and though they started the tournament in sedate fashion with a draw against Switzerland, they then defeated Scotland and the Netherlands convincingly to set up a Quarter-Final against Spain.

In that encounter, England finally won a game via penalties, with Stuart Pearce famously smashing home his effort with great venom.

They then took on Germany at Wembley Stadium and took an early lead through Alan Shearer, only for Stefan Kuntz to score for Berti Vogts’ side, and the game inevitably drifted to penalties, and on this occasion, England were beaten when Gareth Southgate missed his penalty to hand the Germans passage to the final, where they would go on to beat the Czech Republic due to a golden goal from Oliver Bierhof.

At Euro 2000, they failed to get out of the group, but 2004 saw Wayne Rooney burst onto the scene; however, the Manchester United star went off injured in their Quarter-Final with Portugal, and England went on to suffer another penalty shoot-out loss.

England failed to qualify for the 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland, but in 2012, they once again reached the Quarter Finals, where they faced Italy in Kyiv, where they were once again eliminated due to a penalty shoot-out loss.

Euro 2016 saw England lose to Iceland in the Round of 16, but Euro 2020 proved a far more successful campaign, with national team coach Gareth Southgate’s side beating Germany, Ukraine, and Denmark to set up a UEFA European Championship Final against Italy.

England took the lead early on through Luke Shaw before Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci equalized mid-way through the second half, and Southgate then watched on as his side suffered that all too common fate of a spot-kick elimination with three England players: Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missing, handing the trophy to Roberto Mancini’s side.

Romania’s record at the UEFA European Championship finals is pretty poor, and in fact, their one major success in the tournament came after they surprisingly defeated England.

Tricolorii have made it through to five finals tournaments as of 2023, and in four of those, they didn’t get through the group phase and failed to win a single game in any of those editions of the competition.

The one exception to this rule game at Euro 2000 was when Romania needed to secure a positive result against England in their final group game to secure progress to the knockout phase, and they managed to do just that with a fine 3-2 win in Charleroi, Belgium.

They then succumbed to a strong Italy side in the Quarter-Finals, losing 2-0 in Brussels.

England vs Romania Head-to-Head

England and Romania have met on just one occasion in the UEFA European Championship, and that came in a crucial group-stage game in Charleroi.

A draw would have been sufficient for Kevin Keegan’s side, but it was Cristian Chivu who gave Romania the lead after 22 minutes. Alan Shearer fired home a penalty after 41 minutes, and Liverpool striker Michael Owen scored to make it 2-1 at the break.

Romania came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, and a Dorinel Munteanu goal three minutes after the break drew them level.

England looked set to secure the all-important point when Phil Nevile gave away a penalty with one minute to play, and Ioan Ganea promptly fired home the spot-kick to give a memorable 3-2 success, knocking out Keegan’s side in the process.
