Belgium National Team History

The Belgium national team have a relatively strong level of success when it comes to their overall record in European Championships, far exceeding that which you'd expect from a relatively small European nation.

Belgium's first foray into the UEFA Euro finals came in 1972, when they were the hosts but could only muster a third-place finish, and this was back in the days when the tournament finals only included four teams.

They returned to the European Championship finals in 1980 and enjoyed a strong group stage as they drew with both England and Italy and beat Spain, which secured Belgium a place in the final, where they met West Germany, who edged them out 2-1 in Rome.

Cult Heroes

Four years later, in France, Belgium couldn't qualify from their group, despite the presence of top-quality players in their squad, including cult heroes like Enzo Scifo, Jean-Marie Pfaff, and Jans Ceulemans.

It would be another 16 years before they'd make it to the finals again, and in 2000 they once again couldn't get to the knockout stage.

Back to their Best

Another lengthy period without qualification followed, but by 2016 the level of quality in their strong, expansive squad was obvious, and in France 2016, they showed signs of real improvement.

In the group stage, they beat both the Republic of Ireland and Sweden and then thumped Hungary 4-0 in the Round of 16 but were then shocked by a Gareth Bale-inspired Wales side in the quarter-finals.

Losing Quarter-Finalists

At Euro 2020, the delayed tournament that actually occurred in 2021, Belgium once again impressed.

Wins over Denmark, Finland, and Russia saw Belgium top Group B, and they then eased past Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal before taking on Italy in the quarter-finals in Munich. Romelu Lukaku scored a penalty, only for Belgium to lose to goals from Nicolo Barella and Lorenzo Insigne.

Underwhelming Belgium at Euro 2024

Belgium had a disappointing Euro 2024, crashing out in the round of 16 despite going in as one of the pre-tournament favourites.

In Group E they made a shock start, losing 1-0 to Slovakia thanks to an Ivan Schranz goal, with Romelu Lukaku seeing two goals ruled out by VAR. They recovered with a 2-0 win over Romania through strikes from Youri Tielemans and Kevin De Bruyne, then played out a goalless draw with Ukraine in the final group game. That left all four teams tied on four points, with Belgium sneaking through in second place on goal difference.

Their reward was a round of 16 tie against France in Düsseldorf, which they lost 1-0 to a late Jan Vertonghen own goal, deflected in off a Randal Kolo Muani shot. It was a tight, cagey match where Belgium performed reasonably well but couldn't find a goal, with Lukaku again struggling in front of goal throughout the tournament.

Domenico Tedesco's side were heavily criticised for their lack of attacking verve, and the tournament effectively marked the end of Belgium's "golden generation" era, with De Bruyne, Vertonghen, Witsel and others nearing the end of their international careers.
