Belgium vs Poland UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Belgium’s most effective tournaments have come in recent years, and on the whole, there is a feeling that the Red Devils should really have achieved more by now.

They hosted the tournament finals in 1972 and finished third, albeit out of four teams. In 1980, they topped their group, which was no mean feat given that it included Spain, Italy, and England.

They then lost to West Germany 2-1 in Rome. Euro 1984 and 2000 saw them knocked out at the group phase, but at Euro 2016, Marc Wilmots’ side did well to make it through the group phase and past Hungary in the Round of 16 before they crashed out at the hands of Wales in the Quarter-Finals.

At Euro 2020, they repeated the feat, reaching the Quarter-Finals under Roberto Martinez before losing to eventual winners, Italy.

Poland have a very poor record in the UEFA European Championship, failing to make it to the finals until 2008. That came after 12 unsuccessful attempts to make it. At Euro 2008, they managed just one point, and the following edition in 2012 was jointly hosted by Poland with Ukraine, and they managed just two points in the group stage on that occasion.

Euro 2016 finally saw Biało-czerwoni make an actual impact on the tournament. They secured a healthy total of seven points from their group stage fixtures and then beat Switzerland in the Round of 16.

They were then dealt a blow by eventual winners Portugal, who defeated Poland on penalties in Marseille.

Euro 2020 was a return to their poor form, with Poland managing just a single point from their group, that coming after an impressive qualification campaign that saw them win eight of ten games, and therefore, many were expecting a better showing from Robert Lewandowski and his teammates.

These two teams have met in four UEFA European Championship qualifiers over the years but never in the finals of the tournament. The first campaign they faced each other was ahead of the 1968 competition, with Poland beating Belgium twice.

They were once again drawn against each other in the qualifying for the 2008 finals, with Radoslaw Matusiak scoring the winner in Brussels in a 1-0 victory for the Poles and Ebi Smolarek scored twice in Chorzow to give Poland a comfortable 2-0 success.
