Belgium vs Norway UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Belgium have recently impressed in the UEFA European Championships, but their overall tournament record is far more patchy.

They first made it to the finals in 1972 when they finished third, albeit out of four teams, and eight years later, in Italy, they performed far better. On that occasion, they topped their group, which consisted of Italy, Spain, and England.

They then lost to West Germany in the final, with Horst Hrubesch scoring twice in a 2-1 win in Rome.

1984 saw Belgium fail to get out of their group, followed by failure to qualify for 1988, 1992, and 1996. Euro 2000 was co-hosted by the Belgians and neighbours in the Netherlands, and again, they struggled and did not get out of their opening group.

Belgium once again failed to get to the finals at all for the next 16 years, that run coming to an end in 2016 when national team coach Marc Wilmots had a far stronger set of players to select from.

Belgium finally got out of the group phase and then defeated Hungary in the Round of 16 before facing Wales in the Quarter-Finals. It was a game that most would have expected Belgium to win, and they even took the lead through midfielder Radja Nainggolan, only for goals from Ashley Williams, Hal Robson-Kanu, and Sam Vokes to see the Welsh complete a surprise win in Lille.

Euro 2020 saw another run to the Quarter-Finals, this time under coach Roberto Martinez, and on this occasion, they lost out to Italy, who would go on to win the tournament.

Norway have proven very ineffective in the UEFA European Championship, managing to qualify for the finals on just one occasion.

That came at Euro 2000, and they made up for lost time by starting the competition with a surprise 1-0 win over Spain in Rotterdam. They then lost to the Former Republic of Yugoslavia and went into their last group game with Slovenia, knowing that only a win would guarantee progress. Unfortunately, they could only manage a goalless draw in Arnhem and were, therefore, eliminated.

These two national teams have only met in two UEFA European Championship matches, these coming in the qualifying campaign ahead of the 1980 finals. The first of these encounters ended in a 1-1 draw in Lokeren, and the reverse fixture in Oslo was won by Belgium, with the away side coming from behind to win 2-1, with Franky Van der Elst netting the winner.
