Belgium vs Hungary UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Belgium first qualified for the UEFA European Championship finals in 1972 and hosted the four-team tournament. They lost out to West Germany in the Semi-Finals, with Gerd Muller scoring both goals in a 2-1 win in Antwerp before they then defeated Hungary in the Third-place play-off in Liege.
1980 saw Belgium impress greatly at the finals, finishing top of a group that included Spain, Italy, and England. This led the Red Devils to meet West Germany again, this time in the UEFA European Championship Final in Rome. Guy Thys's side then unfortunately lost 2-1, with Horst Hrubesch scoring both goals for the victors.
Belgium disappointed at Euro 1984, failing to make it out of the group phase, and then didn’t make it at all to the finals of 1988, 1992, and 1996.
That run only came to an end in 2000 because, as co-hosts, along with the Netherlands, Belgium did not have to qualify on merit. On home soil, they once again faltered and did not get to the knockout phase.
Another period of failure followed with unsuccessful attempts to get to Euro 2004, Euro 2008, and Euro 2012. Thankfully, national team coach Marc Wilmots, who was also an accomplished national team player, led the Belgians back to the finals, and at Euro 2016, they did very well.
Wins over the Republic of Ireland and Sweden saw Belgium finish second in Group E, and they followed that up with a thumping 4-0 win over Hungary in Toulouse in the Round of 16 before facing Wales in the Quarter-Finals.
Though Belgium took the lead early on through AS Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan, they somehow contrived to lose 3-1, a shock result that not many would have predicted from the outset.
Roberto Martinez took over as national team coach, and his Belgium side remarkably won all ten of their qualifiers and arrived for the Pan-European-held Euro 2020 tournament as one of the favourites.
Their status as possible winners was backed up by a fine group stage run that saw them defeat Denmark, Finland, and Russia to set up a Round of 16 clash with Portugal. A Thorgan Hazard goal gave the Belgians a narrow win in Seville that set up a clash with Italy in the Quarter-Finals.
Robert Mancini’s side were two goals up through Nicolo Barella and Lorenzo Insigne before a Romelu Lukaku penalty cut the deficit before half-time. Italy held on to secure a win and then went on to win the tournament.
Hungary first qualified for the finals of the UEFA European Championship in 1964, finishing third (of four teams), and in 1972, they once again made it to the finale of the competition.
There then followed an extensive drought, with Hungary failing to qualify for any of the next ten tournaments, a run that came to an end at Euro 2016.
Their run in France came to an end in the Round of 16, and at Euro 2020, they didn’t manage to get out of the group stage but had at least improved to the point that getting to the finals at all was now something of a distinct possibility and no longer a rare occurrence.
Belgium vs Hungary Head-to-Head
Belgium and Hungary have twice met in the UEFA European Championship finals.
At Euro 1972, a tournament held in Belgium, the two sides did battle in the third-play play-off, with the home side edging the contest 2-1 in Liege.
The second clash came in the Round of 16 at Euro 2016. Belgium once again took the spoils, albeit on this occasion, the fight was a little one-sided. Goals from Toby Alderweireld, Michy Batshuayi, Eden Hazard, and Yannick Carrasco gave Roberto Martinez’s side a 4-0 win.
