Belgium vs Romania UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Belgium’s first taste of UEFA European Championship finals action came in 1972 when they hosted the finals and, therefore, did not need to qualify. Here, they finished third, albeit out of four teams.
Eight years later, their runners-up finish proved far more impressive, coming after topping their group ahead of Italy, England, and Spain, only to then lose by a narrow margin in a 2-1 loss to West Germany in Rome.
1984 saw the Belgians knocked out in the group stage, and then 16 years later, as co-hosts with the Netherlands, they once again struggled and fell at the first hurdle.
2004, 2008, and 2012 saw Belgium fail to even get close to qualification, but Marc Wilmots turned things around to guide them to the Euro 2016 finals, where they actually impressed in France.
Wins over the Republic of Ireland and Sweden saw Belgium set up a Round of 16 clash with Hungary, which resulted in an easy 4-0 win, but Wilmots then saw his side surprisingly defeated by Wales in the Quarter-Finals.
Four years later, the Quarter-Finals were once again the phase of Belgium’s departure, albeit this time, Roberto Martinez’s side were defeated by eventual champions Italy.
Romania have managed to qualify for the UEFA European Championship on no less than six occasions up to 2023, but on five of those occasions, they failed to make it out of their group stage and, in fact, failed to win a single game in any of those finals tournaments.
The one exception to this rule came at Euro 2000 when an aging Gheorghe Hagi captained the side to the Quarter-Finals. They started with a credible draw with Germany before losing to Portugal.
This left Romania having to secure something from a clash with England, and they performed excellently to beat the Three Lions 3-2 in Charleroi, thereby knocking out Kevin Keegan’s side.
Romania then took on Italy in the Quarter-Finals but were easily defeated, with Francesco Totti and Pippi Inzaghi both scoring in the first half in Brussels.
Belgium vs Romania Head-to-Head
Belgium and Romania have never met in a UEFA European Championship clash; in fact, the only competitive campaign that the two sides have clashed in was the qualifying tournament ahead of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
In their first fixture, a goal from Rudy Smidts gave Belgium a 1-0 win on home soil, and in the return, in Bucharest, goals from Florin Raducioiu (formerly of West Ham) and Illie Dumitrescu gave Romania a 2-1 win. Ultimately, both teams made it to the finals in the United States.
