Belgium vs Spain History

Both of these teams have history to look back on in the UEFA European Championship, although only one of them has actually hoisted this prestigious title. Spain hosted (and won) the second edition of this tournament in 1964, with only four teams taking part.

Other than a runners-up finish in 1984, La Roja were mostly underwhelming at the Euro finals for the best part of 30 years. This barren spell came to an end in 2008, as the Spanish claimed European honours for the second time, as Fernando Torres scored the decisive goal to beat Germany in the final.

Spain retained its title at Euro 2012, having also celebrated success at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. A resounding 4-0 victory over Italy saw La Roja become the first team to win back-to-back Euro tournaments.

Belgium, meanwhile, have never conquered Europe but have previoiusly come close to doing so. The Red Devils finished 3rd at Euro 1972 and then had to settle for 2nd prize at the 1980 event. The Belgians co-hosted Euro 2000 but exited the showpiece at the group stage. Only in 2016 would Belgium return to the finals of this competition, reaching the quarter-finals before crashing out to Wales.

These teams have clashed several times before, though only a few of these meetings have come at major tournaments. Belgium and Spain shared a group at Euro 1980, as the Belgian Red Devils ran out 2-1 winners to eliminate the Spaniards from the competition. Belgium went on to lose to West Germany in the final at the Stadio Olimpico.

The teams were grouped together again at the 1990 World Cup, also held in Italy. Spain beat Belgium, 2-1, as both sides would go on to reach the knockouts, though they each crashed out at the Round of 16. That would remain the last time Belgium and Spain shared a pitch at a major tournament prior to Euro 2024, with their meetings limited to qualifiers and friendlies.
